I treated a 79 year old woman who had a 70 year hx of constipation that started after her father died suddenly when she was 9 years old. She had been doing neural retraining through another program, and her gut was now to moving on a daily basis. In her assessment where I found primaries in her left tibia, femur, and pelvis, C-spine, T-spine, cranium and R shoulder, and I did a small treatment on L Tibia and femur. She was pleased with the impact and came back for a 2nd treatment 1 wk later (she could now straighten her leg that she was unable to straighten “in 30 years”). I treated the cranium, C-spine and umbilicus. (I had planned to stop after the cranium and C-spine but she said “do more”). The day after treatment she had nausea, diarrhea, was diaphoretic and in bed, followed by 2 days of bloating and abdominal discomfort, then on third day just bloating. She felt like it was in response to the treatment as she could not think of anything she had ingested to cause it. I inquired if she felt like it was a “letting go” and suggested that perhaps I had taken treatment too quickly. Recommended rest, hydration, and said I would check in. Has anyone seen this response to treatment? Do you see anything in my treatment plan that could have brought this on?

Those post treatment symptoms are not unusual, but not frequent. How did she feel after the third day? I have had only one or two clients experience vomitting after their first treatment, or have odd bowel movements. Some clients do feel strong flu-like symptoms or strong muscular discomfort. It is difficult to assess if you did the treatment “correctly”, as it can be a matter of subjective interpretation and experience that would guide the practitioner. You can reassure her that it may have been too much for her at the time, and perhaps you could treat her in shorter treatment sessions until you feel that her body can handle bigger changes. Did the umbilicus come up as a primary the first time, or only after you treated the cranium and cspine? I also think that you should listen to her body and trust your intuition to help guide you with the treatment. Please keep us updated if you have any other issues.

Thanks, Freda! The umbilicus turned up only after the cranium, C-Spine. Next time round, I will go with my gut and stop when I think it’s time to stop. Fortunately, my client’s gut is feeling completely settled on Day 5 and she is still eager to come for a follow up appointment, though we will wait a couple of weeks.

That is great that she her digestive system is feeling settled. To me then, it really did need it, but perhaps was a bit too much at once. It is also great that it did not turn her off from treatment. This is why it is important to remind the client of possible reactions to treatment and home care to help alleviate those symptoms. good job!

The thoughts that immediately came to mind with the umbilical treatment were first the immediate proximity of the alarm points for the LI/LU meridians and the emotions of grief and anguish which I am sure that she experienced as a nine year old losing her father. This alarm point coincidentally is on the Stomach meridian with major emotions of despair and hopelessness. I would be curious, if she remembers her immediate physical reactions to the death of her father, other than her long term constipation.
It sounds like a very beneficial emotional/physical release for this woman and also the reason that she is anxious to continue care with you. I would say “good job Christine”. -
